Education

« The right to education is the right to life »! This saying reflects our deep conviction. The privileged target of Ecoles de la Terre is its educational programme. Therefore, basic education is our priority in our struggle against the misery that befalls these children in most disadvantaged environments. Every child we support, lives in difficult circumstances and does not have any other possibility or access to studies, other than what we do our best to provide, either because they live in slums and their parents are not able to send them to school, or because they live in rural and distant areas where there are no schools. The educational requirements and the school systems are different from an urban zone to a rural zone. That is why our educational programmes and actions vary and depend on the geographical area:
Urban zone preparatory schools

The children who are concerned are 3 to 10 years old living in slums. The programmes cover the needs of nursery school and mandatory primary school, and the teaching covers the basic elementary school requirements.
We work in urban and semi-urban zones in dense areas, that is to say, close by an official school within the children’s residential area.
Our objective is to help these poor children to catch up as quickly as possible with the normal school system, either where the government or private school’s official programme is taught. Access is determined by passing an admission test. The children who cannot catch up with the official system, for various reasons, can acquire the basic school knowledge: reading and writing in their own mother tongue, basic arithmetic and English skills.
Rural zone Nursery and Primary schools
The children who are concerned are 3 to 15 years old living in rural zones. The school programmes are organized for the nursery school, the primary mandatory classes (grades I to VIII) and, if possible, the secondary school (grades IX to X). Every subject that is part of the official programme, including English, is taught.
Our schools are located in rural and isolated zones where the educational infrastructure is rare or non-existent; that is to say, in areas where children do not have schools close to their home, and providing the official programme.
Our objective is to enable the maximum of scholars to accomplish successfully a part or the entire mandatory school degree course, and then to continue their secondary level studies in an official establishment.
Orientation and school follow-up platform

The big majority of the parents of our students are illiterate. Therefore, it is impossible for them to initiate and follow-up the studies of their children, to advise and to support them in their efforts. Deprived of this indispensable help, it is difficult for these disadvantaged children to integrate into the official school system and programmes. To address these deficiencies, we have set up this platform focusing on advice, orientation and school follow-up.
This programme concerns our current and future students, as well as our former students who are continuing their education in a secondary school, and all poor students who need support in their studies in their own schools.
We give advice concerning the school orientation, take care of finding a school and offer help with the inscription procedure. On the educational and pedagogical level, we organize levelling classes, crash courses and school follow-up.
Concerning the subjects, every lesson, every subject of the official programme, for the primary and the secondary school, is taught. Historically, the children of the urban and semi-urban zones, mostly the slams and poor areas, benefit of this programme. Since the beginning of the Year 2000, our students in the rural zones have also benefited from this system.
Our objective is to provide necessary support to the disadvantaged children at the beginning and the follow-up in their studies, on one hand informing their parents and substituting them in some steps, on the other hand providing direct help with extra lessons, apart from their school schedule.
Our educational programmes are complementary and aim at providing additional support to be as complete as possible, for these disadvantaged children, to accompany them all along this process and to help them to become autonomous and responsible adults, who in return would be in a position to help the future generation.
Enterprises
This programme intends to diversify our action by creating production or service activities near the schools and apprenticeship centres. Besides that it intends to generate resources for covering the running costs of the schools and centres.

Two different approaches have been taken for follow-up training of pupils nearing graduation and to offer to our branches – West Bengal, Bihar and Rajasthan – other sources of revenues.
The Pedagogical Farms
Born out of our preoccupation to offer rural youngsters perspectives for training in the fields of agriculture, livestock rearing and marketing in the local markets, an initial pedagogical farm was created near our school in Jolibigha, at Naian Bigha village in the Gaya distict of Bihar; look also at the link Apprentissage at the chapter Farm Apprenticeship.
This approach is based on environmental and between- generation factors, aimed at creating a kind of “ecoregion” comprising the ten villages surrounding Jolibigha school and to bring support to its farmers.
Its objective is to manage the supply of the local people concerning their biological food and to generate profits with the crops. The year 2010 has shown the first profit, which has been used to develop the farm. The activities in the fields of livestock rearing and local marketing will soon be integrated.
A second pedagogical farm of this type is now being established in West Bengal, near our school of Naba Kishalay, in the Sonatikari village, on the Kultali island of the Sundarbans; the activities covering cereal growing and fishculture are specially due.
The Handicraft workshops
In the field of the textile trades – garment making, sewing,embroidery, batik, etc.- and the making of handicrafts – jewellery, leather work, small statues, handbags, folders, etc.- an initial production workshop is active near our Sujata school in Bihar, not far from Bodhgya;
see also our Apprenticeship link in the Apprenticeship chapter. The revenues generated are used to fund the apprenticeship centre connected to the production workshop. A similar structure is planned in Jaisalmer, within the complex of our Satyadev school.
The Other Enterprises
This small organisation provides for the distribution of medicines and paramedic items. A doctor present at the store at the end of the day provides some health care – some urgent acts, injections, etc… The fees charged are lower than for similar establishments of this kind. The profits of the first year are used to run the schools of the Rajasthan branch.
THIS ENTERPRISE PROGRAMME, STILL ONLY BEGINNING, SHOULD DEVELOP CONSIDERABLY IN THE COMING YEARS!

ECOLES DE LA TERRE
Entreprises
